Stop SFI GreenwashThe Issue The Facts The Solutions Media

Taking action against the phony eco-label

Our balloon banner at 2009's Greenbuild conference floated above SFI's booth.
SFI's promotion of forest destruction as ‘sustainable’ has allowed companies such as Sierra Pacific Industries (one of the biggest threats to California’s forests) and direct mailers such as American Express and Bank of America to appear green for too long. That's why we're working to expose the deception of their phony green label. In 2009, we started shaking things up by filing legal complaints with the US Federal Trade Commission to challenge SFI’s misleading marketing and with the Internal Revenue Service to question SFI’s nonprofit status.

We also called out SFI's greenwash at Greenbuild, the world's largest green building conference. At SFI’s 2010 Annual Meeting in Vancouver, we unfurled a 288 square foot banner that read "Selling False Information = Greenwash".

We must educate companies about SFI greenwash

Download our report, "SFI: Certified Greenwash" to learn more about why companies need to move away from 'Sustainable' Forestry Initiative's label and certification scheme.

Many companies deceptively market the paper they use as green using the bogus SFI label.
These misleading claims undermine the hard work and smart choices of companies that are making a genuine effort to be environmentally responsible. In our Paper Campaign, we are urging companies to avoid greenwash by discontinuing any use of phony eco-labels like SFI’s.

We are working with Fortune 500 companies to educate them about the risks – to their brands, as well as to our forests, water and communities – of SFI’s greenwash.

Take action now:

Tell GEICO and Travelers to stop trashing our forests!
GEICO and Travelers Insurance need to adopt paper policies that protect our forests, not destroy them.
